The Old Cement Barge is one of Abu Dhabi's most interesting wreck dive sites, resting on the seabed in the waters off the emirate's coastline in the Arabian Gulf. This advanced-level dive takes experienced divers to a submerged industrial barge that has been transformed by years of marine colonization into a thriving artificial reef. The barge itself is a substantial structure sitting upright on the sandy bottom. Its flat deck, open holds, and angular superstructure create a variety of swim-through passages, sheltered overhangs, and open spaces that make for an engaging exploration dive. The industrial geometry of the vessel provides interesting contrasts with the organic growth that now covers virtually every surface - a visual metaphor for nature's ability to reclaim even the most artificial of environments. Years of immersion have allowed the barge to develop a rich ecosystem. Hard and soft corals have colonized the hull and deck structures, while dense schools of fish have made the wreck their permanent home. Large grouper lurk in the shaded areas beneath the deck, while barracuda and cobia patrol the perimeter. The holds and internal spaces are home to lionfish, scorpionfish, and a variety of crustaceans that thrive in the darkness. Macro enthusiasts will find nudibranchs, flatworms, and tube worms decorating the surfaces in intricate detail. The advanced rating is appropriate due to the depth at which the barge rests and the potential for reduced visibility in the Arabian Gulf's waters. Penetration of any enclosed spaces requires proper training and equipment, and divers should be comfortable with wreck diving protocols. Current is generally mild at the site, though conditions can vary. Visibility in the Arabian Gulf can be challenging compared to the East Coast, typically ranging from 3 to 8 meters, though exceptional days may offer 10 meters or more. Water temperatures are warm year-round, particularly in summer when they can exceed 33 degrees. The Old Cement Barge offers Abu Dhabi-based divers an excellent wreck diving experience without the need to travel to the East Coast, proving that the Arabian Gulf has its own hidden underwater treasures waiting to be explored.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
