Naufragio Folias is a wreck dive site located in the Golfo Nuevo near Puerto Madryn, Argentine Patagonia. This beginner-friendly wreck sits in a slightly more exposed position than some of the other wrecks in the gulf, offering divers a distinctive exploration experience in the cold, biologically rich waters of the South Atlantic. The Folias rests on the gulf's seabed, its remains creating a significant underwater structure that has become an integral part of the local marine ecosystem. The wreck provides the essential hard surfaces and sheltered spaces that marine life needs in the predominantly sandy environment of the Golfo Nuevo, making it a focal point for underwater biodiversity. Years of immersion in the Patagonian waters have transformed the Folias into a living reef. The hull and structural elements are covered in dense marine growth, with each section of the wreck supporting its own community of organisms. The biological succession is fascinating to observe - from the pioneer species that first colonized the bare metal to the complex community that now thrives across every surface. The position of the Folias within the gulf means it sometimes receives slightly more current than the more sheltered wreck sites, which in turn brings more nutrients and supports a particularly active marine community. Fish schools are often dense around the wreck, and the variety of species can be impressive. Like all Puerto Madryn sites, there is the exciting possibility of sea lion encounters that add an unpredictable thrill to the experience. The wreck is accessible to beginner-level divers, though an awareness of basic wreck diving etiquette - maintaining distance from fragile growth, controlling fin kicks near the structure, and staying outside the wreck - is important for both safety and conservation. Water temperatures follow the Patagonian pattern of 8 to 18 degrees seasonally, requiring appropriate exposure protection. Visibility ranges from 5 to 12 meters, with the best conditions during the calmer summer period from December through March. Naufragio Folias is another excellent wreck in Puerto Madryn's impressive collection, offering a dive that combines maritime heritage with Patagonia's extraordinary underwater vitality.
