Boyas Blancas is an advanced freshwater dive site located in the Corrientes province of northeastern Argentina, in the subtropical region near the legendary Ibera wetlands and the Parana River system. This challenging site offers a distinctly different diving experience from Argentina's mountain reservoirs, immersing divers in the warm, wildlife-rich waters of the Mesopotamia region. The name 'White Buoys' refers to the navigation markers that identify the dive area within this extensive river system. The Parana and its tributaries form one of South America's largest waterway networks, and diving here means entering a powerful freshwater ecosystem where the scale of the water and the strength of the current create conditions that demand respect and experience. The advanced rating is well-earned due to the river conditions that characterize this site. Current can be significant, visibility can change rapidly with shifting conditions, and the depth and flow of the river require confident navigation and buoyancy skills. Divers must be comfortable managing themselves in moving water and should have experience with current diving techniques. The underwater environment reveals the character of a major subtropical river system. The riverbed features sand banks, clay formations, and submerged structures that have been shaped by the constant flow of water. Fallen trees and riverine debris create habitat structures that attract concentrations of fish and other aquatic life. The biodiversity of the Parana system is impressive. Native freshwater species including dorado, surubi, pacua, and various catfish species inhabit these waters. Some of these fish can be very large, providing exciting encounters for divers accustomed to smaller marine species. The warm, nutrient-rich water supports a complete food chain from invertebrates to large predatory fish. The subtropical climate of Corrientes means water temperatures are warm for much of the year, with the most comfortable conditions from October through April. The lush surrounding landscape of subtropical forest and wetlands adds to the exotic character of the experience. Boyas Blancas offers adventurous divers a window into one of South America's great river ecosystems, providing encounters with freshwater giants in a current-fed environment that is unlike any ocean diving experience.
