Big Broadhurst Reef is a spectacular dive site on the outer Great Barrier Reef, located approximately 100 kilometers offshore from Townsville in north Queensland. This beginner-friendly reef system offers some of the most pristine and remote diving accessible from the Townsville coast, with crystal-clear waters and exceptional coral coverage. The outer reef position of Big Broadhurst means it benefits from the clean oceanic water of the Coral Sea, which typically provides outstanding visibility of 20 to 30 meters or more. This clarity, combined with the abundant sunlight at this tropical latitude, creates ideal conditions for coral growth, and the reef responds with some of the healthiest and most diverse coral formations in the central Great Barrier Reef. The reef structure offers varied diving terrain including dramatic walls that drop into the deep blue, shallow coral gardens bathed in sunlight, and intricate bommie formations that rise from the sandy bottom like underwater castles. Each habitat zone supports its own community of organisms, ensuring that every section of the dive offers something new and interesting. Marine life on the outer reef is both abundant and diverse. The deep water surrounding the reef brings pelagic visitors including sharks, rays, and large schools of trevally and barracuda. On the reef itself, the full complement of Great Barrier Reef species is represented - from tiny, jewel-like damselfish to large Maori wrasse and resident green turtles. The relatively low visitor numbers compared to inner reef sites mean fish populations are healthy and often less wary of divers. Despite its remote location, diving conditions at Big Broadhurst are suitable for beginners, with sheltered areas available on the reef top and gentle depths in the lagoon sections. Access is primarily via liveaboard vessels. Water temperatures range from 23 to 29 degrees year-round. Big Broadhurst Reef exemplifies the raw, unspoiled beauty of the outer Great Barrier Reef - a marine wilderness of global significance.
