Salt Pier is one of Bonaire's most distinctive shore dives — a working industrial pier at the island's southern salt-flat export facility that has become, over decades, one of the Caribbean's most photographed shore dives. The massive pier pilings, driven into the seabed in 8-18 meters of water, are completely encrusted with hard and soft corals, sponges, and anemones, creating a cathedral-like underwater forest beneath the working structure above. The dive is accessed directly from the shore when the pier is not loading ships, with divers walking in from the beach and swimming 20 meters out to the first piling. The pilings form geometric rows extending 80+ meters offshore, each completely transformed into vertical coral gardens. Between the pilings, schools of grunts, snappers, and sergeant majors patrol in shifting formations, while tarpon hang motionless in the shadows beneath the pier structure above. Octopus, seahorses, and frogfish are regular finds for observant divers. Marine life is exceptional for a shore dive. Eagle rays cruise the sand channels between pilings, green and hawksbill turtles graze on the encrusted pilings, and Caribbean reef sharks occasionally appear at the pier's outer edge. The macro life is spectacular — seahorses, frogfish, banded coral shrimps, arrow crabs, flamingo tongues, and the famous Caribbean yellow-head jawfish in their sandy burrows. Night dives reveal hunting octopus, basket stars, and the rare chance to see the spawning behaviors that make Bonaire a photographer's paradise. The dive requires advance coordination with local operators, as access is blocked when ships are loading or unloading. Open Water certification is sufficient given the shallow depth (18 meters maximum). Accessed by car from Kralendijk (20 minutes south along the coast road). Visibility 20-30 meters, water temperatures 25-29°C year-round. Bonaire's unique dive marine park system requires a tag (sold at all operators) that funds reef protection — tags are valid for a full year and include shore access to virtually every dive site on the island.
