Qiandao Lake (Thousand Island Lake) in Zhejiang Province holds one of China's most fascinating underwater archaeological sites at 35 meters depth. When the Xin'anjiang Dam was completed in 1959, it flooded two ancient cities — Shi Cheng (Lion City) and He Cheng — preserving Ming and Qing Dynasty architecture beneath the reservoir. Advanced divers can explore remarkably intact stone archways, carved facades, temples, and streets frozen in time. The cold, dark freshwater conditions require technical preparation, but swimming through a perfectly preserved underwater Chinese city is an unparalleled diving experience.
