Manuelita Island is a small rock outcrop just 150 meters off Cocos Island's northeastern shore, and its surrounding reef is one of the most accessible and rewarding dive sites on any Cocos liveaboard itinerary. The site is famous for the phenomenal density of whitetip reef sharks — hundreds of sharks rest on the reef during daylight, then depart at dusk for night hunting in one of the most dramatic shark-behavior spectacles in diving. The dive is typically performed as two dives: the outer wall (Manuelita Coral Garden) at 10-25 meters during the day, and the inner reef at 20-30 meters where the whitetip sharks rest. By day, divers drift along the wall observing hawksbill turtles, schools of jacks and tuna, Galápagos sharks, and the occasional hammerhead. At dusk, Manuelita becomes one of the world's most spectacular shark dives — 200+ whitetip reef sharks awaken and begin coordinated night-hunting, working together to flush prey from the coral in a feeding frenzy that can be observed from a respectful distance. Marine life beyond the sharks is exceptional. Spinner dolphins and bottlenose dolphins frequent the site, along with schools of marble rays, eagle rays, and the occasional manta ray. The coral community is rich — hard corals, soft corals, and sponges cover the walls, with dense anemones and reef fish populations. Manuelita is also one of the best sites on Cocos for hammerhead encounters close to shore, particularly during the June-November peak. Manuelita is Advanced Open Water diving, with the night/dusk dive requiring Night Diving specialty. Reached exclusively from Cocos liveaboards out of Puntarenas, Costa Rica (36-hour ocean crossing). Visibility 15-30 meters, water temperatures 21-27°C (variable with thermoclines). Best conditions June through November, when both hammerhead schools and the nocturnal whitetip hunting reach peak intensity.
