Arinaga is synonymous with Gran Canaria diving — specifically with the Reserva Marina de El Cabrón, one of Spain's most successful marine protected areas and a site where the combination of protected status, cold Atlantic upwelling, and varied volcanic terrain has produced marine life of extraordinary richness accessible to beginner divers. The name Arinaga refers to the small coastal town that serves as the gateway to this diving, and a dive here is an introduction to everything that makes Gran Canaria's east coast so highly regarded. The marine reserve at El Cabrón encompasses a section of Gran Canaria's volcanic eastern coastline where cold, nutrient-rich upwelling from depth creates conditions unusual for a Canary Islands site: colder water (as low as 16°C in winter months), reduced visibility in upwelling events, but exceptional marine life density and the presence of cold-water species alongside subtropical and tropical residents. This overlap of Atlantic temperature zones creates a biodiversity that is genuinely unique in the Canary Islands. Angel sharks are the reserve's signature species. Gran Canaria's El Cabrón was one of the first sites where the recovery of this critically endangered Canarian shark was documented, and encounters with resting individuals on the sandy substrate within the reserve are among the most memorable available to beginner divers anywhere in European waters. These animals are relaxed, habituated to the presence of divers who approach slowly and respectfully, and in the shallow conditions of the reserve they can be observed for extended periods in extraordinary detail. The remainder of the marine life at Arinaga matches the calibre of the angel shark encounters: large dusky grouper, torpedo rays resting on sand, the massive schools of bogues and bream that patrol the open water, and the abundant invertebrate life — sea urchins, starfish, octopus, and the spectacular nudibranch species that thrive in cold, productive waters — that rewards slow, attentive observation.
