Arrecife Artificial — the Artificial Reef — is a beginner dive site on Gran Canaria's southern coast built around purpose-constructed underwater structures that have been deployed to create new reef habitat in an area of sandy seafloor. This practical conservation and dive site development approach has produced results that repay the investment: an artificial reef that has developed over time into a genuine ecological community, its concrete or steel substrate colonised by the encrusting organisms and inhabited by the fish species that create a functioning reef ecosystem. Artificial reef diving has a distinctive character that appeals to divers of all experience levels. The structures themselves — geometric shapes, concrete modules, or deliberately sunk objects — have the quality of underwater architecture: recognisable forms progressively transformed by marine life, the original material becoming substrate for sponges, corals, and anemones that gradually obscure the structure beneath a living community. The process of transformation provides narrative interest as well as ecological value — a long-established artificial reef is a showcase for the speed and tenacity of marine colonisation. Gran Canaria's southern coast, in the vicinity of the resort areas near Maspalomas, benefits from the warm, clear water typical of the island's protected southern shores. The Canary Current's direct influence is reduced here, and water temperatures are more moderate than on the exposed eastern coast, making conditions comfortable for beginners year-round. Visibility is typically good, and the absence of strong current makes the artificial reef an easy site to navigate and enjoy without distraction from challenging conditions. The fish community around the artificial structures includes the typical Canarian reef assemblage: abundant bream and bogues in schooling formations, dusky grouper claiming the best shelter positions within the reef structure, and the Canary Islands wrasse species providing constant colour and movement across the encrusted surfaces. A relaxed, enjoyable dive with the added interest of observing how the underwater world reclaims and transforms human-made structures.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
