La Catedral — the Cathedral — earns one of diving's most evocative names through a geological formation of genuine architectural splendour: tall, columnar basalt structures that rise from the seafloor like the pillars of a vast underwater nave, channeling light from above in filtered shafts and creating the atmosphere of a sacred interior that gives the site its name. Located on Gran Canaria's northeast coast, this intermediate site combines geological drama with the productive marine life of Atlantic-facing Canarian waters. Cathedral formations in volcanic diving are the product of columnar jointing — the geometric cracking of cooling lava that produces remarkably regular hexagonal or rectangular columns of basalt, their vertical lines and even surfaces presenting a striking contrast to the usual organic irregularity of reef topography. At La Catedral, these formations create a three-dimensional space of real grandeur, the columns rising through the water column with the vertical emphasis and filtered light that make the cathedral analogy immediate and obvious. The light that plays through and around the column formations is one of the site's signature qualities: at certain times of day and with the sun at the right angle, shafts of light penetrate between the basalt pillars and illuminate the suspended particles and marine life in the water column in theatrical fashion. The columns themselves are encrusted with the typical Canarian community of sponges, anemones, and crusting organisms, but the geometry of the formation gives even familiar species an unfamiliar context and impact. Fish life within and around the cathedral formation reflects its position on the productive northeast coast: schooling species occupy the open spaces between columns, large grouper claim territorial positions at the base of the formation where the light is dimmer, and the wrasse species that clean the larger fish work their circuit of the site's surfaces. An intermediate dive of genuine aesthetic distinction in an already visually impressive island.
