Veneguera is one of Gran Canaria's most remote coastal locations — a dramatic valley on the far southwest coast accessible only by boat or a lengthy mountain hike, its pristine black sand beach backed by towering volcanic cliffs and fronted by water of exceptional clarity. This remoteness is the dive site's primary virtue: the marine life here develops with minimal human disturbance, and the characteristic undisturbed quality of remote Canarian coastal sites is fully expressed at Veneguera. Reaching Veneguera by boat from the nearest marina adds a genuine sense of expedition to the diving: the approach along Gran Canaria's dramatic western cliffs, the cove coming into view as the boat rounds a headland, the anchor going down in water clear enough to see the bottom from the surface — all of this sets the context for a dive that delivers the unhurried, exploratory character of true remote site diving rather than the managed experience of resort dive centres. The underwater terrain at Veneguera is the volcanic basalt typical of Gran Canaria's southwest coast, but in a condition less often seen: relatively undamaged by anchor chains, free of the plastic debris that accumulates on more accessible sites, and populated by fish that have not learned to associate human presence with feeding or harassment. This naivety in the fish behaviour — grouper that maintain their ground rather than retreating, parrotfish that continue feeding regardless of observer proximity — is characteristic of rarely-dived sites and immediately apparent to divers experienced enough to notice the difference. The conditions for beginner divers are generally good: the cove provides some shelter from the prevailing Atlantic swell, and the depth range covers accessible zones appropriate for those still building experience. The marine life, including the angel sharks that are a feature of Gran Canaria's southwest sandy areas, and the sea turtles that forage along the remote western coast, make Veneguera a destination worth the logistics involved in reaching it.
