Agujero Azul — the Blue Hole — is an advanced dive site in northern Lanzarote, where the volcanic geology of this Canary Island has created an extraordinary geological feature: a vertical shaft or deep cavity in the basalt that plunges toward significant depth, its walls encrusted with the organisms that colonise these shaded, sheltered environments, and its interior opening onto a space of dramatic, enclosed blue that justifies its name entirely. Lanzarote's northern coast, in the area around Arrieta and Jameos del Agua, is defined by the volcanic activity that built the island: lava tubes, sea caves, and the geological features that result when magma meets the ocean are abundant here, and Agujero Azul is one of the most dramatic expressions of this geology in an underwater context. The blue hole formation — whether a collapsed lava tube, a sea cave, or a vertical shaft eroded through the basalt — creates a diving environment of genuine architectural grandeur. The advanced designation reflects several challenges: the depth of the feature's interior requires careful management of descent and bottom time, the enclosed environment demands comfort with limited overhead conditions, and the current that can develop in this exposed northern section of Lanzarote needs active management during tidal changes. Divers without experience in these conditions should approach with a local guide familiar with the site's specific demands. Inside the formation, the rewards are exceptional. The blue of the water in the enclosed space — intensified by the depth and the reflected light from the opening above — creates the visual effect that gives the site its name. The walls of the cavity are encrusted with shade-tolerant organisms: encrusting sponges in vivid reds and purples, large anemones, and the feather stars that extend from crevices in the dim interior. The contrast of the enclosed, richly decorated walls with the intense blue of the cavity's interior space is one of the most striking visual experiences in Canary Islands diving.
