Papagayo — named after the beautiful curved bay and beach area on Lanzarote's southern tip, one of the island's most celebrated stretches of coastline — is a beginner dive that brings together the exceptional clarity and warmth of Lanzarote's most sheltered southern waters with the volcanic basalt terrain and diverse marine life that have made this section of the island's coast a diving destination worth visiting in its own right alongside its famous beaches. The Papagayo coves sit on Lanzarote's southernmost coast near the Punta del Papagayo, where the island's rocky volcanic terrain creates a series of sheltered sandy beaches separated by low volcanic headlands. The underwater terrain reflects this surface character: volcanic basalt formations alternating with sandy sections, the rock creating the reef habitat and the sand providing the open-water areas where different species communities develop. The sheltered southern position creates calm, warm, clear conditions throughout the year. The dive at Papagayo begins in shallow, calm water and progresses through basalt formations that descend to accessible beginner depths. The reef community here reflects the high quality of Lanzarote's southern dive zone: encrusting sponges and anemones well-developed on sheltered basalt surfaces, the endemic Canary Islands wrasse species in good numbers, and the large dusky grouper that are a consistently rewarding encounter throughout southern Lanzarote's protected reef. Sea turtles are a particular feature of the Papagayo dive area, where loggerhead turtles have long used the sheltered southern coves as foraging habitat. Encounters here have the quality of relaxed, unhurried observation rather than brief sighting — these are animals accustomed to the presence of snorkellers and divers from the beach and show a calm tolerance that allows extended appreciation. Angel sharks rest on the sandy sections adjacent to the reef, and the entire Papagayo underwater environment has the well-preserved quality of a coast that has been protected from the more intensive development found in other parts of the island.
