Pasir Putih Situbondo is a muck diving gem on the north coast of East Java, a shore-accessible site where volcanic black sand gives way to a surprisingly rich ecosystem of rare critters. The gentle sandy slope between 3 and 15 meters hosts an impressive cast of macro subjects: frogfish, seahorses, flamboyant cuttlefish, mimic octopus, and a dazzling variety of nudibranchs make this a rewarding destination for critter hunters. Ghost pipefish appear seasonally among soft coral patches, while snake eels, mantis shrimp, and decorator crabs add to the diversity. The site is particularly excellent for night diving, when the sand comes alive with hunting creatures and bioluminescence. Easy shore entry, no current, and warm shallow water make Pasir Putih ideal for extended macro photography sessions, rivaling the more famous muck diving sites of Lembeh and Manado at a fraction of the crowds.
