The Dama Wreck is Kish Island's premier diving experience — an advanced wreck dive in the Persian Gulf that combines the historical interest of a sunken vessel with the rich marine colonisation that the warm Gulf waters encourage, producing one of the region's most rewarding and visually dense underwater sites. The wreck sits in the waters off Kish Island, Iran's resort island in the northern Persian Gulf, and despite the unusual geopolitical context, it is a dive site of genuine international quality that rewards the effort of seeking it out. The Dama is a cargo vessel that came to rest on the Gulf seabed in circumstances that vary in the telling — collision, mechanical failure, and navigational error have all been offered as explanations, and the full truth is as submerged as the ship itself. What is beyond dispute is that the wreck now provides the most structurally complex artificial reef in the Kish Island diving area, its hull and superstructure supporting a marine community that has been accumulating and developing since the vessel sank. The advanced rating reflects the depth of the main wreck structure and the navigational demands of exploring a vessel whose interior passages and holds offer penetration possibilities for experienced wreck divers. The Persian Gulf is warm enough to dissolve biological debris rapidly, and the wreck's steel surfaces are heavily colonised by the organisms that the warm, nutrient-rich Gulf water supports. Sponges of several species coat the hull. Coral colonies — of the hardy species suited to Gulf conditions — have established on the horizontal surfaces. Schools of glassfish fill the interior spaces with shimmering clouds through which predatory species make repeated hunting passes. The fish life around the Dama is the site's most immediately striking feature. Grouper of impressive size have taken up semi-permanent residence in the wreck's more sheltered compartments, their territorial claims established over years of occupation. Large shoals of snapper and bream orbit the wreck structure in the water column just above the hull, creating a living halo of silver fish that catches any available light. Moray eels occupy the tightest crevices in the metalwork, their patient disposition contrasting with the constant activity of the schooling fish above them. For divers willing to travel to the Persian Gulf for their wreck diving, the Dama delivers an experience that holds its own in the global wreck diving canon.
