Otomi Beach is a beginner-friendly dive site on the coast of Japan's Sea of Japan side, offering a gentle introduction to temperate Pacific diving. The site features a rocky shoreline that extends underwater as a series of low reef formations reaching 10 meters depth over a sandy bottom. The temperate waters support a fascinating mix of marine life distinct from tropical destinations: colorful wrasses, sea breams, and rockfish inhabit the kelp-draped rock formations, while octopuses and cuttlefish are commonly encountered. Seasonal changes bring dramatic shifts in marine life — nudibranchs proliferate in spring, schools of Japanese jack mackerel appear in summer, and sea slugs in extraordinary variety are found year-round. The site's shallow depth and protected entry make it popular for training dives and local diving courses, offering a window into the surprisingly diverse underwater world of Japan's temperate seas.
