Guryongpo Resort (구룡포 리조트) is an advanced coastal dive site located in Pohang, on South Korea's southeastern Gyeongsang coast. Despite its modest maximum depth of 6 metres, this site earns its advanced rating through challenging conditions including cold water temperatures, variable visibility, and the strong currents that sweep along this exposed stretch of the East Sea (Sea of Japan) coastline. The site sits within the Guryongpo area, a peninsula known for its dramatic rocky coastline and rich fishing traditions. The underwater terrain reflects the geological character of the coast above, with volcanic and sedimentary rock formations creating a rugged seabed of boulders, crevices, and low reef walls. The rocky substrate is covered in a lush carpet of kelp and seaweed species that sway rhythmically in the current. The East Sea's cold, nutrient-rich waters support a temperate marine ecosystem quite different from the tropical diving more commonly associated with scuba tourism. Rockfish species dominate the fish community, their mottled camouflage making them challenging to spot among the kelp-covered rocks. Sea cucumbers and various species of sea urchins are abundant, while octopuses are commonly encountered in the numerous rock crevices. The Guryongpo coast is influenced by the cold Liman Current from the north and the warm Tsushima Current from the south, creating a productive mixing zone that supports rich marine biodiversity. This nutrient abundance translates to excellent feeding opportunities for marine life, and divers may encounter large schools of squid during their seasonal migrations through these waters. Water temperatures range from a challenging 8 degrees in winter to around 23 degrees in late summer, with a drysuit strongly recommended for year-round diving. Visibility varies from 3 to 15 metres, heavily influenced by seasonal plankton blooms and storm activity. Guryongpo offers a raw, authentic Korean diving experience far from tourist circuits, appealing to divers who appreciate temperate water ecosystems and the unique marine life of the East Sea.
