Taejongdae Gamji Coast (태종대 감지해변) is an intermediate-level dive site located along Busan's iconic Taejongdae cliff coastline, on the southeastern tip of the Korean Peninsula. Reaching 25 metres depth, this site showcases the dramatic submarine extension of the famous coastal cliffs in the productive waters where the East Sea meets the Korea Strait. Taejongdae is one of Busan's most celebrated natural landmarks, its towering cliffs of sedimentary and volcanic rock drawing millions of visitors annually. Below the waterline, these same geological formations continue their descent, creating walls and ledges that provide some of the most accessible deep diving near a major Korean city. The underwater cliffs at Gamji Coast feature horizontal stratification in the rock face, creating natural ledges at various depths where marine life concentrates. Overhangs and small caverns formed by differential erosion of softer rock layers provide shelter for larger fish and invertebrates. The rock surfaces are densely colonised by a mix of temperate organisms including hydroids, bryozoans, sponges, and soft corals. Busan's waters benefit from the convergence of the warm Tsushima Current and cooler East Sea waters, creating conditions that support an unusually diverse marine community for a temperate location. Colourful soft corals including Dendronephthya species add splashes of red and orange to the walls, while schools of yellowtail and sea bream patrol the reef edges. Octopuses are frequently encountered in the crevices, and nudibranchs of various species reward those who search the encrusted surfaces carefully. The site's proximity to the open ocean means current can be a factor, particularly during tidal changes. Surface conditions can also be challenging when winds blow from the south, making boat operations uncomfortable. Most dive operators schedule dives around weather windows and tidal patterns. Water temperature ranges from 12 to 25 degrees Celsius across the seasons, with summer offering the most comfortable conditions. Taejongdae Gamji Coast delivers surprising diving quality within easy reach of Korea's second-largest city.
