Dakune Gala is an intermediate dive site off Sri Lanka's western coast, where a submerged rocky outcrop rises from the seabed to create a reef formation known locally as a gala. These natural rock formations are characteristic of Sri Lankan diving, providing hard substrate for marine life in waters that would otherwise be sandy and relatively barren. The gala structure consists of a cluster of large boulders and rocky ridges that create a compact but diverse reef environment. The rocks provide overhangs, crevices, and swim-throughs that harbour a wealth of marine species. The formation rises several metres from the surrounding sandy bottom, concentrating marine life like an oasis and making the site productive despite its relatively modest size. Hard coral coverage on the gala is developing well, with various species of Acropora, Porites, and brain corals establishing on the rocky surfaces. Soft corals add vivid colour, particularly in the sheltered overhangs where water movement is reduced. Sponges and tunicates encrust every available surface, creating a colourful mosaic that makes the rock formations visually engaging. The marine life at Dakune Gala includes a healthy population of reef fish typical of the Indian Ocean. Groupers of various sizes inhabit the larger crevices, while schools of fusiliers and snappers patrol the gala's perimeter. Sweetlips are commonly encountered in sheltered areas, their spotted patterns providing excellent photographic subjects. Moray eels extend from rocky dens, and blue-spotted ribbontail rays rest on sandy patches adjacent to the formation. The intermediate rating reflects moderate current that can sweep across the gala, requiring comfortable mid-water buoyancy control. The surrounding sandy expanse means navigation is straightforward, with the gala serving as a clear focal point for the dive. Water temperatures average 27 to 29 degrees, with the best diving conditions occurring during the northeast monsoon from November to April. Dakune Gala provides a representative Sri Lankan gala diving experience.
