Y-Gala is an intermediate dive site off Sri Lanka's southern coast, named for the distinctive Y-shaped configuration of its main rock formation as viewed from above. This unique topographical feature creates a natural amphitheatre effect underwater, with two rocky ridges converging to form a sheltered area where marine life concentrates. The Y-shaped formation consists of two rocky ridges that meet at a point, creating a funnel shape that channels current and accumulates nutrients. The sheltered area within the Y provides calmer conditions where less current-tolerant species thrive, while the outer faces of the ridges are exposed to stronger flow and attract different marine communities. This dual character within a single site makes Y-Gala unusually diverse for its size. Coral coverage along the rocky ridges includes a healthy mix of hard and soft coral species. The exposed outer surfaces support robust hard corals that can withstand current, while the sheltered interior hosts more delicate branching corals and extensive soft coral growth. Gorgonian sea fans on the outer ridge faces create impressive displays, their flat surfaces perpendicular to the current flow. The marine life at Y-Gala benefits from the formation's current-funnelling effect. Schools of snappers and fusiliers aggregate in the sheltered V formed by the ridges, their numbers sometimes impressive. Larger predators including trevally and barracuda patrol the formation's outer edges, taking advantage of the concentrated prey. Within the rock crevices, groupers, moray eels, and lobsters maintain their territories. The intermediate rating reflects the current conditions that develop around the formation, particularly on the exposed outer faces where tidal flow accelerates around the ridges. Divers should be comfortable maintaining position in moderate current and managing their buoyancy in moving water. The northeast monsoon season from November to April offers the best diving conditions, with visibility of 10 to 20 metres and water temperatures averaging 27 to 29 degrees. Y-Gala is a rewarding site that demonstrates how underwater topography shapes marine ecosystems.
