White Rock Batticaloa is an advanced dive site off Sri Lanka's eastern coast near the historic port city of Batticaloa. At 12 metres depth, the advanced rating reflects the challenging conditions of the east coast, where currents and visibility can be unpredictable, rather than the depth itself. The site features a distinctive white-coloured rock formation that stands out against the surrounding sandy seabed. The rock formation's pale colour, caused by a combination of the rock's mineral composition and encrusting coralline algae, makes it a notable landmark both for boat captains and for divers navigating underwater. The formation creates a compact but interesting reef habitat, with the rocky structure providing shelter and substrate for marine organisms in an area dominated by sandy bottom. The eastern coast of Sri Lanka remains one of the country's less-explored diving frontiers, with development of the diving industry lagging behind the more established southwestern coast. This relative lack of diving pressure means the marine life at White Rock is less habituated to divers but potentially more abundant and natural in its behaviour. Marine life at the site includes groupers, snappers, and various wrasse species inhabiting the rock's crevices, while schools of pelagic fish pass through the area on their migrations along the east coast. The Indian Ocean's warm waters support coral growth on the rock surfaces, with both hard and soft coral species establishing. Sea turtles are seen periodically, and the site's offshore position attracts occasional visits from larger species. The advanced rating reflects the east coast's more demanding diving conditions, including stronger currents, less predictable weather patterns, and greater distance from emergency services. The diving season on the east coast runs from April to September during the southwest monsoon, when the eastern waters are calmest. Visibility ranges from 5 to 15 metres, with water temperatures around 27 to 29 degrees. White Rock offers adventurous divers a taste of Sri Lanka's undiscovered eastern diving frontier.
