The SS Margit, also known as MV Odile, is an advanced wreck dive off Malta's east coast in the harbour approaches. This cargo vessel, which met its end in Maltese waters, now provides a substantial wreck diving experience in the busy waters near Valletta. The wreck lies on the seabed with significant structural remains, including hull sections, machinery, and cargo handling equipment. The vessel's size creates an extensive diving area that rewards multiple visits, with different sections offering distinct exploration experiences. The harbour approach location means the wreck has been subject to marine growth over many years. Marine colonisation has been extensive, with the wreck now functioning as one of the more productive artificial reef structures in the harbour area. Dense growths of sponges and tunicates coat the hull, while the interior spaces have been claimed by groupers, conger eels, and various species of bream. The wreck concentrates marine life from the surrounding sandy approaches. The advanced rating reflects the depth, overhead environments within the wreck, and the harbour approach location where current and visibility can be variable. Experienced wreck divers will find rewarding penetration opportunities in the vessel's more intact sections. Visibility ranges from 10 to 25 metres depending on harbour conditions and weather. Water temperatures from 15 to 26 degrees across the year. The SS Margit/MV Odile adds another layer to Malta's comprehensive wreck diving collection.
