Wied iz-Zurrieq Blue Grotto is an advanced dive site on Malta's south coast, where the famous Blue Grotto sea cave extends beneath the surface to create a stunning underwater environment. The Blue Grotto is one of Malta's most visited natural attractions, and diving here reveals a perspective that surface boat tourists never experience. The underwater portions of the Blue Grotto feature massive cave openings in the limestone cliffs, with passages connecting multiple chambers beneath the headland. The natural light filtering through the cave openings creates the intense blue illumination that gives the grotto its name, and this effect is even more dramatic from underwater, where the entire water column glows with reflected light. The cave walls support colourful marine organisms including orange false coral colonies, sponges in vivid purples and yellows, and tunicates. The combination of colourful growth and blue ambient light creates one of the most visually stunning underwater environments in the Mediterranean. Marine life within the grotto includes groupers, moray eels, and various reef fish adapted to the cave environment. The sheltered conditions attract species not common on the exposed reef outside. The advanced rating reflects the depth, overhead environments, and the south coast's exposure to swell that can make entry conditions challenging. The site is only accessible on calm days. Visibility is typically excellent in the grotto's clear waters. Water temperatures from 15 to 26 degrees. Diving the Blue Grotto reveals Malta's most famous natural attraction from a perspective reserved exclusively for divers.
