Anemone Garden is an intermediate dive site near Mahebourg on Mauritius's southeastern coast, reaching a maximum depth of thirty meters and named for the spectacular concentration of sea anemones that carpet sections of this reef, hosting thriving communities of clownfish in one of the most visually stunning displays of marine symbiosis you will find in the Indian Ocean. The boat from Mahebourg crosses the lagoon toward the outer reef where the site is located, and the descent drops through warm water to a reef that immediately reveals its signature feature. Anemones in several species spread their tentacles across the reef surface in dense clusters, their colors ranging from deep purple through vivid green to pale beige. Each anemone hosts its resident clownfish — bold, territorial, and endlessly entertaining as they dart among the stinging tentacles that protect them while providing their host with food scraps and cleaning services. The density of anemone and clownfish partnerships at this site is genuinely remarkable. While individual anemones with their clownfish residents are common throughout the Indian Ocean, Anemone Garden concentrates these partnerships in extraordinary numbers, creating extended stretches of reef where virtually every formation hosts at least one anemone colony. The behavioral drama is constant — clownfish defend their homes with comical aggression against fish many times their size, eggs are tended in carefully prepared patches of bare rock, and the different anemone species display subtle variations in their relationship with their fish partners. Beyond the anemone fields, the reef supports a full complement of tropical marine life. The coral formations are healthy and diverse, providing habitat for butterflyfish, angelfish, and surgeonfish in satisfying variety. The deeper sections of the site harbor larger species — groupers, moray eels, and occasional rays that patrol the reef edge. The rocky substrate supports nudibranchs and various crustaceans, and cleaning stations attract queues of fish seeking the attention of cleaner wrasse and shrimp. Anemone Garden offers intermediate divers a thematic dive experience built around one of the ocean's most fascinating ecological relationships. The site transforms the familiar clownfish encounter from an occasional bonus into the main event, providing extended observation opportunities that reveal the complexity and beauty of anemone-clownfish symbiosis in unprecedented detail.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
