Fotteyo Kandu is widely regarded as one of the finest channel dives in the entire Maldives, a spectacular passage on the eastern rim of Felidhoo Atoll that has earned legendary status among the global diving community for its extraordinary combination of dramatic topography, vibrant soft coral growth, and world-class marine encounters. Many experienced Maldivian divers consider Fotteyo to be the single best kandu dive in the archipelago — a claim supported by the consistent quality of every element the dive delivers. The channel entrance presents a scene of genuine underwater grandeur. The reef walls drop steeply on either side, their faces decorated with soft corals of such density and vivid color that the channel resembles an underwater gallery. Massive gorgonian fans, branching soft coral trees in luminous reds, oranges, and purples, and cascading formations that drape from overhangs create a visual spectacle that is unmatched anywhere else in the atoll. The current carries divers through this living gallery at a pace that allows appreciation of every detail while maintaining the exhilarating sensation of controlled flight. The channel features a series of dramatic overhangs and caves that punctuate the walls at various depths. These formations shelter some of the atoll's most impressive aggregations of fish — schools of oriental sweetlips in hundreds, dense clouds of blue-lined snappers, and the spectacular sight of giant schools of batfish that fill the larger caves like living curtains. Swimming beneath these overhangs, with the decorated ceiling overhead and the schools parting around you, creates moments of genuine underwater magic. The pelagic encounters at Fotteyo Kandu live up to the site's legendary reputation. Grey reef sharks are present in substantial numbers, often visible in groups that patrol the channel entrance with focused intent. Eagle rays sweep through the passage with metronomic grace, and during the right conditions, hammerhead sharks may be spotted in the deeper blue beyond the channel rim. Napoleon wrasse of exceptional size approach divers with characteristic curiosity, and the constant traffic of trevally, barracuda, and tuna adds energy to every moment of the drift. Fotteyo Kandu deserves its reputation as the Maldives' premier channel dive — a site where every element of the kandu experience is elevated to its highest expression. The diving here is advanced in every sense, demanding current skills and depth management while delivering rewards that justify any diver's journey to this remarkable corner of the Indian Ocean.
