Alimas Faru wraps around its namesake reef formation in South Malé Atoll, presenting intermediate divers with a beautifully structured faru dive that reaches twenty-two meters at its deepest points while offering extensive shallow reef terrain for unhurried exploration. This well-proportioned dive site balances accessibility with genuine underwater quality, making it a versatile addition to any South Malé diving itinerary. The faru's oval shape creates a natural progression of diving environments as you move around its perimeter. The outer face drops away to its maximum depth with moderate steepness, the wall decorated with hard corals in robust growth forms that have adapted to the currents flowing past the reef's exterior. Large plate corals extend from the wall in overlapping tiers, creating sheltered spaces where schools of cardinalfish hover in reddish-brown clouds. Deeper down, gorgonian fans and soft coral colonies add their characteristic colors, the vivid pinks, oranges, and reds creating striking contrast against the blue water visible beyond the reef edge. The inner face of the faru presents a different character entirely. Protected from the stronger external currents, this sheltered side supports more delicate coral growth in extraordinary diversity. Branching corals grow in elaborate formations that create dense habitat for small reef species, while mushroom corals and other free-living species dot the sandy patches between larger formations. The calmer conditions on the inner face also favor macro photography, with subjects remaining still and accessible in the gentle water movement. Fish life at Alimas Faru is abundant and varied. Schools of powder-blue surgeonfish move across the reef surface in organized feeding waves, their collective movement creating one of the reef's most visually striking displays. Wrasses of multiple species add their characteristic energy to the scene, from the vivid colors of fairy wrasses to the measured patrol of adult Napoleon wrasses. Triggerfish defend their territories with the determined aggression that makes them both entertaining and occasionally hazardous to divers who stray too close to nesting sites. The faru's summit provides some of the dive's most rewarding moments. Here, in the warm shallow water where sunlight illuminates every color, the coral garden reaches its peak beauty. Anemone colonies host their clownfish residents in constant activity, while cleaning stations attract queues of fish waiting for their turn with the tiny cleaner wrasses and shrimp. Turtles cruise across the summit with unhurried grace, pausing to feed on sponges or rest on coral formations that seem purpose-built for their shell-shaped bodies. Alimas Faru offers the kind of consistently excellent diving that forms the reliable backbone of a South Malé Atoll diving program, a site where every dive delivers satisfaction and every return visit reveals something new.
