Coco Giri Thila combines two of the Maldives' signature reef formations into a single intermediate-level dive site in Vaavu Atoll, where a giri and thila complex creates an underwater landscape of unusual variety and exceptional marine diversity. Reaching thirty meters at its deepest sections while offering comfortable summit diving at shallower depths, this formation provides the kind of multi-layered experience that keeps divers engaged from descent to ascent. The site's dual nature is its most distinctive feature. The giri and thila formations sit in close proximity, creating a combined reef structure that supports different ecological communities on each formation while sharing the current-driven nutrient supply that makes both formations productive. Swimming between the two structures reveals subtle differences in coral composition, fish community, and topographic character that reflect the slightly different conditions each formation experiences. The summit of the shallower formation hosts a spectacular coral garden where hard corals grow in dense, diverse formations bathed in tropical sunlight. Table corals reach impressive spans, their flat surfaces creating gathering points for schools of snapper and fusilier that hover in organized formations above the coral canopy. Branching corals fill the spaces between larger formations, their intricate structures providing refuge for the countless small fish species that form the reef's ecological foundation. The deeper formation offers a different character, with steeper walls and more dramatic topography creating an environment that attracts larger marine visitors. Reef sharks patrol the deeper water surrounding this structure, their circuits passing between the two formations in routes that experienced guides can predict and position divers to observe. The walls support impressive soft coral growth in the deeper zones, with gorgonian fans and Dendronephthya colonies adding vivid color to the dimmer light conditions. The passage between the two formations creates a natural channel effect that concentrates current and marine life. Schools of fusiliers stream through this gap in dense formations, their movement attracting predatory species that use the reef structure as ambush cover. This concentrated feeding zone provides some of the dive's most exciting moments, as jacks and trevally make high-speed strikes through the schooling fish in explosive displays of predatory efficiency. Coco Giri Thila offers the kind of structural and ecological complexity that makes it a site worth visiting repeatedly, with each dive focusing on different aspects of this dual formation to build a comprehensive picture of one of Vaavu Atoll's most interesting and diverse underwater environments.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
