Coral Garden lives up to its simple but evocative name with an underwater display of reef growth so dense and diverse that it feels like swimming through a curated exhibition of Indo-Pacific coral species. Located within Vaavu Atoll at depths reaching thirty meters, this intermediate dive site combines the gentle beauty of its namesake coral formations with enough depth and current exposure to attract larger marine species, creating a well-rounded dive that satisfies both naturalists and thrill-seekers. The garden begins in the shallows, where sunlight illuminates a carpet of coral so thick that hardly any substrate is visible beneath the living coverage. Staghorn corals create dense thickets that pulse with the movements of hundreds of damselfish defending their individual territories within the colony. Table corals extend outward in wide platforms, their surfaces hosting gatherings of chromis and anthias that retreat into the coral structure at the approach of predators, only to emerge seconds later when the threat passes. As depth increases, the coral composition shifts but the density remains extraordinary. Massive Porites colonies that have been growing for centuries form the reef's structural backbone, their rounded shapes creating the rolling landscape that gives the garden its character. Between these anchor species, every available niche is occupied. Encrusting corals paint the harder surfaces in reds and oranges, while foliose species create ruffled curtains of living tissue that sway gently in the current. Soft corals add their own contribution in the deeper zones, with tree-like formations in purples and pinks reaching outward from the wall. The fish life supported by this remarkable coral health is proportionally abundant. Schools of fusiliers pour over the reef in blue and silver streams, their numbers sometimes so dense they briefly block the view of the coral below. Sweetlips gather beneath overhangs in clusters, their spotted patterns creating an attractive display of marine camouflage. Groupers of several species occupy their territories throughout the garden, the larger specimens having clearly established themselves over many years in prime locations where current delivers food directly to their waiting jaws. Macro life at Coral Garden deserves special attention. The coral diversity creates an enormous range of micro-habitats that support an equally diverse invertebrate community. Nudibranchs in dozens of species graze across the reef surface, their elaborate colors and patterns seeming almost too vivid to be real. Porcelain crabs filter-feed beneath anemone tentacles with their delicate fan-like appendages. Christmas tree worms add geometric precision to coral surfaces, their twin spirals snapping shut with lightning speed at the approach of a shadow. Coral Garden represents the Maldives' reef ecosystem at its most complete and vibrant, a living library of tropical marine species coexisting in a balanced, thriving community. Whether you come for the grand panorama or the smallest details, this garden never disappoints.
