Maaya Thila is one of the Maldives' most celebrated dive sites and a strong contender for the title of the archipelago's finest night dive. Located in Ari Atoll, this substantial submerged pinnacle offers beginner-accessible diving during the day while transforming into a world-famous nocturnal spectacle after dark, where nurse sharks, white-tip reef sharks, and a cast of nocturnal marine creatures create an underwater experience of unforgettable intensity. During daylight hours, Maaya Thila is a beautiful and rewarding thila dive. The summit rises to comfortable depth, crowned with healthy hard corals that create a garden alive with tropical fish. The formation's sides feature overhangs decorated with soft corals, and the marine community includes Napoleon wrasse, groupers, moray eels, and schools of reef fish that populate the formation in impressive density. The accessible depth makes it suitable for beginners while offering enough interest to engage experienced divers. At night, Maaya Thila transforms. As darkness falls, the thila's nocturnal residents emerge to hunt, and the reef takes on an entirely different character. White-tip reef sharks, invisible or resting during the day, become active predators, their sleek forms weaving through the coral in pursuit of sleeping reef fish. Nurse sharks cruise the base of the thila, their broad bodies gliding through the torchlight. Large moray eels emerge fully from their daytime hiding places to hunt among the coral, and the occasional octopus can be spotted moving across the reef with the fluid motion that reveals its intelligence. The invertebrate life during night dives is equally spectacular. Lobsters, crabs, and shrimp emerge in remarkable numbers, their eyes reflecting torchlight like scattered jewels. Basket stars unfurl their intricate arms to feed, and the coral polyps themselves extend fully to capture the planktonic food that rises through the water column after dark. Maaya Thila is an essential Maldivian dive that delivers two completely different experiences depending on when you visit — a vibrant tropical reef by day and one of the world's most famous nocturnal marine spectacles by night.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
