The most famous dive at Banco Chinchorro, 40 Cañones is a 17th-century Spanish galleon that ran aground in 1648. Resting in just 8 meters, the hull has vanished but 36 bronze cannons remain scattered across 30 by 10 meters of sandy bottom — a haunting underwater museum. Coral has colonized the cannons over nearly four centuries.
