Punta Sur and its legendary Devil's Throat represent the ultimate advanced dive on Cozumel, a deep and dramatic site at the island's southernmost tip where powerful currents, stunning coral architecture, and the most famous swim-through in the Caribbean create an experience reserved for the most skilled and experienced divers. This is where Cozumel's reef system reaches its most spectacular and challenging expression, and diving the Devil's Throat is widely considered a rite of passage among serious Caribbean divers. The Devil's Throat is a massive natural tunnel that descends through the reef at a steep angle, beginning at approximately twenty-five meters and exiting through openings in the wall face at around thirty-five meters. The tunnel is wide enough for comfortable passage and decorated with impressive sponges and coral growth on its interior walls. Filtered light from the exit points creates an otherworldly blue glow that illuminates divers as they pass through, and the experience of emerging from the throat onto the open wall face with the deep Caribbean blue stretching below is genuinely breathtaking. Beyond the Devil's Throat, the Punta Sur wall itself is magnificent. The vertical drop-off extends to enormous depths, and the wall face is decorated with the most spectacular coral formations on the island. Enormous barrel sponges, massive gorgonian fans, and cascading black coral colonies create a deepwater garden of remarkable beauty. The wall's exposure to open water at the island's tip means pelagic encounters are more frequent here than at the more sheltered western sites. The current at Punta Sur can be substantial, as this is where the island's western and eastern currents converge at the southern point. This dynamic water movement brings nutrients that support exceptional biodiversity and attracts large marine species. Eagle rays are common visitors, sometimes appearing in small groups. Reef sharks patrol the wall's edge, and during favorable conditions, larger pelagic species including hammerheads and whale sharks have been reported in the surrounding deep water. The shallow reef platform above the wall features impressive coral gardens and large formations that provide excellent diving even without descending to the Devil's Throat. Sea turtles, nurse sharks, and abundant reef fish populate these upper sections, and the Cozumel splendid toadfish can be found in its characteristic dark retreats. The diversity of the site means dive profiles can be adjusted based on group experience and conditions, though the Devil's Throat itself demands advanced certification and solid experience. Punta Sur requires favorable weather and current conditions, and Cozumel's dive operators carefully assess the situation before committing to this exposed site. When everything aligns, however, the combination of the Devil's Throat passage, the spectacular wall, and the enhanced marine life creates what many regard as the single greatest dive in the entire Caribbean Sea.
