Torrecillas challenges advanced divers with one of Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo's most dramatic underwater formations, where towering volcanic rock pinnacles rise from the Pacific seabed to create a dive site of genuine topographic grandeur. These submarine towers, which give the site its Spanish name meaning little towers, provide the structural complexity that attracts large marine species and creates current patterns that make this one of the Guerrero coast's most exciting dives. The pinnacles at Torrecillas are volcanic in origin, their dark stone surfaces rising sharply from the sandy bottom to create vertical habitat that is rare along this section of the Pacific coast. The towers' height creates different ecological zones at different depths, with the sunlit upper sections supporting different species from the darker bases. This vertical stratification means that a single dive traversing the towers' full height encounters multiple community types, each with its own characteristic species and behaviors. The current flowing around and between the pinnacles is the site's defining challenge and attraction. As water moves past the towers, it accelerates in the gaps between formations and creates eddies on the lee side, concentrating nutrients and attracting marine life in predictable patterns. Large schools of jacks and snappers gather in the current-washed areas between towers, their metallic formations creating spectacular visual displays. The current also draws larger visitors including rays and occasionally sharks to the productive zone around the pinnacles. The rock surfaces host dense communities of Pacific marine organisms. Gorgonian sea fans grow to impressive sizes on the current-exposed faces, while sponges and encrusting organisms paint the volcanic stone in vivid colors. The towers' numerous crevices and overhangs shelter moray eels, groupers, and the lobsters that emerge from their daytime hiding places after dark. The structural complexity of the pinnacles supports a biodiversity that far exceeds the surrounding flat substrate. The deeper sections around the towers' bases provide the site's most dramatic encounters. The dark volcanic stone creates atmospheric backdrops for schools of fish that gather in the shelter of the towers' bulk. Visibility can be excellent during calm conditions, allowing views across the full span between towers that reveal the scale of this underwater formation in dramatic fashion.
