Vuelta de Gato, Cat's Turn, challenges advanced divers with a dramatic section of Huatulco's coastline where the rocky shoreline makes an abrupt turn that creates the current patterns and topographic features for which this site is named. The exposed position and current make this one of Huatulco's more demanding dives, but the concentrated marine life and dramatic underwater scenery reward experienced divers with encounters that showcase the Oaxacan Pacific at its most dynamic. The site takes its name from the sharp bend in the coastline where the rocky shore changes direction abruptly. This geographic feature forces the Pacific current to accelerate around the corner, creating the upwellings and eddies that concentrate nutrients and attract marine life from the surrounding waters. The volcanic rock descends steeply at this point, creating vertical and near-vertical walls that add topographic drama to the current-driven encounters. The current is both the challenge and the reward at Vuelta de Gato. When flowing, the water around the turn brings marine life in impressive concentrations. Schools of jacks and snappers form dense aggregations in the current-washed zone, while larger predatory species patrol the edges. The nutrient upwelling supports vigorous marine growth on the rock surfaces, with large gorgonian fans and dense encrusting communities reflecting the abundant food delivery. The rock formations around the turn create varied habitats despite the energetic conditions. Sheltered zones behind the corner's edge support more delicate organisms, while the exposed faces host only the most robust species. This contrast creates different diving experiences on different sides of the turn, effectively offering two distinct environments within a single site. The deeper sections around the base of the formation provide encounters with the larger sedentary species. Groupers and moray eels of impressive size occupy the prime territories, their positions reflecting years of established residency in these productive waters. The rocky crevices also shelter the lobsters and crabs that add invertebrate diversity. Vuelta de Gato captures the wild character of Huatulco's more exposed Pacific coast sites, where current and volcanic topography combine to create marine encounters of genuine intensity.
