The Boiler is the most celebrated manta ray dive in the Revillagigedo Archipelago and widely considered the best giant manta encounter site on Earth. A submerged pinnacle off San Benedicto Island that rises from 40 meters to within 10 meters of the surface, the Boiler is a manta cleaning station used daily by the archipelago's resident population of giant oceanic manta rays (Mobula birostris) — enormous animals with wingspans reaching 7 meters that have been documented by researchers for decades and exhibit behaviors unlike any other manta population in the world. The Revillagigedo mantas approach divers with sustained, intense interaction — they circle, glide over hovering divers for minutes, and occasionally return multiple times within a single dive. Many individual mantas are named and recognized by researchers, and the population has become so accustomed to divers that interactions often last 20-30 minutes. The Boiler's cleaning station at 25-30 meters is the hub of this activity, with butterflyfish and wrasses servicing the mantas as divers observe from a respectful distance. Beyond the headline mantas, the Boiler offers extraordinary pelagic diversity. Galápagos sharks, silky sharks, and whitetip reef sharks patrol the pinnacle, schools of yellowfin tuna and rainbow runners cycle through, and bottlenose dolphin pods frequently visit — sometimes approaching divers directly. Humpback whales are audible throughout January-March, with occasional close encounters. The pinnacle itself is covered in black coral and gorgonian fans with colorful reef fish populations. The Boiler is Advanced Open Water diving with drift experience — currents are moderate to strong, thermoclines drop temperatures to 21-23°C, and the pinnacle's exposed position can produce surface chop. Access exclusively via Revillagigedo liveaboards from Cabo San Lucas (24-hour crossing, 7-10 day itineraries). Visibility 25-40 meters, water temperatures 21-28°C. Best conditions November through May, with humpback whale vocalizations strongest January-March.
