Chebeh Island is an exciting beginner-friendly dive site located near Tioman Island off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, where a small rocky islet creates diverse underwater habitats in the warm waters of the South China Sea. Part of the Tioman Marine Park, Chebeh offers accessible diving with surprising biodiversity and the rocky topography that makes island diving more interesting than typical flat reef sites. The island's underwater perimeter features a dramatic landscape of massive granite boulders that have tumbled from the island's rocky shores into the sea. These boulders create a jumbled terrain of swim-throughs, overhangs, and channels that provide structure and shelter for a remarkable concentration of marine life. The spaces between and beneath the boulders harbor everything from resting nurse sharks to colorful nudibranchs, creating a treasure-hunt quality to the diving that keeps every moment engaging. Coral growth on and around the boulders is healthy and diverse, with the Coral Triangle's species richness evident in the variety of hard and soft corals colonizing every available surface. Table corals spread across the boulder tops, while soft corals drape from overhangs in cascades of color. The interplay of rocky substrate and coral growth creates habitat diversity that supports an impressively long species list for a relatively compact site. Fish life at Chebeh Island is vibrant and abundant. Schools of fusiliers stream past the boulders in impressive numbers, their blue and yellow bodies catching the tropical sunlight. Batfish approach divers with their characteristic curiosity, sometimes hovering close enough to touch. Groupers occupy the deeper recesses between boulders, and the occasional black-tip reef shark patrols the site's perimeter, adding a thrill of excitement to what might otherwise be a relaxed reef dive. The site's beginner-friendly sections occupy the shallower boulder fields where depths remain comfortable and light penetration is excellent. The natural protection provided by the island means surface conditions are typically calm, and the generally gentle currents allow new divers to focus on enjoying the marine life rather than managing challenging conditions. Chebeh Island is reached by boat from Tioman Island's various dive operators, with the short transit offering views of the island's dramatic granite peaks and rainforest-covered slopes. The diving season runs from March through October when the South China Sea is at its calmest and clearest. For divers visiting Tioman, Chebeh Island provides an exciting and accessible dive site that showcases the best of Peninsular Malaysia's marine biodiversity.
