Coral Hills is a beautiful beginner-friendly dive site in the Semporna archipelago of Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, where gently rolling reef formations create an underwater landscape of coral-covered hills that gives the site its descriptive name. Located in the productive waters between the small islands near Mataking and the Semporna coast, this site offers accessible diving with the extraordinary Coral Triangle biodiversity that makes this region one of the planet's most species-rich marine environments. The underwater topography at Coral Hills features a series of rounded reef mounds rising from a sandy bottom, each crowned with diverse coral communities that create their own miniature ecosystems. These hills vary in height and profile, providing natural navigation landmarks and creating an engaging diving route that meanders between formations. The moderate depth and gentle slopes make the site easy to navigate for newer divers while offering enough variety to maintain interest throughout the dive. Coral diversity at the site is outstanding, reflecting the Semporna area's position at the heart of the Coral Triangle. Hard coral species in dozens of forms create the structural backbone of each hill, from massive Porites colonies to delicate branching Acropora and table-forming species that spread across the mound tops. Soft corals add vivid color, particularly in the deeper sections and on the hills' shaded faces, where purple, pink, and red colonies create stunning contrast against the blue water background. Fish life is abundant and varied, with the coral hills acting as oases of life in the sandy seascape. Schools of anthias hover above the coral in shimmering clouds, their tiny bodies catching the light in constant movement. Clownfish occupy their anemone homes across the site, providing the reliable close-up encounters that delight divers of all experience levels. Butterflyfish in multiple species pick at coral polyps, while wrasses of numerous varieties add color and movement to every corner of the reef. The sandy channels between hills provide habitat for sand-dwelling species including gobies, garden eels, and the occasional resting stingray. Blue-spotted stingrays are a highlight, their electric blue spots vivid against the pale sand. Sea cucumbers and sea stars add to the diversity of the inter-hill spaces, and divers transitioning between coral mounds often discover interesting finds in these transitional zones. Coral Hills is accessed by boat from the Semporna area's dive resorts and liveaboards, which use the site as part of a broader diving program that may include more advanced sites in the archipelago. The gentle conditions and genuine biodiversity make it an ideal training site and a relaxed recreational dive that showcases the Coral Triangle's marine wealth in an accessible and thoroughly enjoyable format.
