Fingers is a beginner-friendly dive site near Tofo in Mozambique's Inhambane province, reaching 18 meters and named for the finger-like coral and rock formations that extend from the main reef structure into the surrounding sand. These natural protrusions create a distinctive underwater landscape where marine life concentrates along the fingers' edges, creating clearly defined exploration routes that make navigation intuitive and the diving experience naturally structured. The finger formations are elongated ridges of coral-covered rock that project outward from a central reef mass, separated by sandy channels that vary in width from a few meters to more than ten. Each finger supports its own resident marine community, and swimming along one finger, across a sandy channel, and along the next creates a rhythmic exploration pattern that reveals different species compositions and habitat features at each stop. Coral growth on the fingers is healthy, with hard corals forming the structural base and soft corals adding color and movement along the fingers' edges and undersides. The elongated shape of each formation means the coral receives excellent water circulation, promoting vigorous growth and supporting dense fish populations. The fingers' tips, extending into open sand, are particularly interesting zones where reef species and sand-dwelling species overlap. Marine life distributes itself logically across the finger landscape. Territorial species claim positions along the fingers' tops and sides, while schools of planktivores hover in the water column above. The sandy channels between fingers host rays, flatfish, and garden eel colonies, and the transition zones at each finger's base are productive hunting grounds for predators that ambush prey moving between reef and sand habitats. The Tofo coast's famous megafauna adds a layer of excitement to diving at Fingers. Whale sharks and manta rays that frequent the area can make appearances at any depth, and their unexpected arrival at a shallow, relaxed site like Fingers creates moments of extraordinary contrast between the gentle reef diving and the sudden presence of the ocean's giants. Turtles are commonly seen cruising along the fingers or resting in sandy patches. Fingers represents the accessible, rewarding diving that makes the Tofo area compelling for divers beyond the headline megafauna encounters. The site's clear structure, comfortable conditions, and diverse marine life create a satisfying experience that demonstrates the day-to-day quality of Inhambane coast diving.
