The FAD is an advanced dive site in the Bazaruto Archipelago, descending to 33 meters near a fish aggregation device that has transformed a section of open water into one of the region's most productive marine encounters. FADs, floating structures deployed to attract pelagic fish, create artificial oases in the ocean where marine life concentrates around a focal point, and this site leverages that principle to deliver diving with exceptional big-fish action. The aggregation device itself has created an ecosystem where one previously did not exist. In the open ocean, drifting objects attract juvenile fish seeking shelter, which in turn draws progressively larger predators up the food chain. The FAD at this site has matured into a genuine marine habitat where established food-web relationships produce consistent, spectacular encounters. The structure and its immediate surroundings have become colonized by algae and invertebrates, further enhancing its role as a productivity hub. The marine life concentrations around The FAD are impressive. Large schools of trevally and kingfish orbit the structure in classic predatory patterns, their muscular bodies reflecting the energy-rich feeding opportunities the aggregation provides. Wahoo and dorado make occasional appearances, their speed and color creating brief but electrifying moments. Below the main structure, schools of snapper and fusiliers form dense clouds that attract the predators above in a visible demonstration of food-chain dynamics. The deeper water surrounding The FAD places divers in the pelagic zone, where encounters with larger species are possible. Whale sharks visiting the Bazaruto area sometimes investigate the FAD and its associated plankton concentrations. Sailfish have been reported in the vicinity, their spectacular dorsal fins providing unmistakable identification even at distance. Reef sharks and the occasional bull shark cruise the perimeter, attracted by the concentrated prey. Diving The FAD is fundamentally different from reef diving. The site exists in open water with no bottom reference at comfortable depths, requiring divers to be comfortable hovering in blue water and managing depth using their instruments rather than visual cues. The 33-meter maximum depth reflects the deeper water column where much of the action occurs, and narcosis management is a practical consideration. Current can carry divers away from the structure, making orientation and buddy awareness essential skills. The FAD offers a unique diving experience within the Bazaruto complex, complementing the reef-based diving at other sites with open-water encounters that showcase the Mozambique Channel's pelagic productivity. For advanced divers seeking big-fish action in blue water, this site delivers some of the region's most exciting and unpredictable encounters.
