HMSNZ Canterbury Wreck is the advanced-rated version of the celebrated Canterbury wreck dive in the Bay of Islands, accessing the deeper sections of this former Royal New Zealand Navy frigate that was scuttled in 2007 to create an artificial reef. At 36 meters to the seabed, this represents the full-depth experience of one of the Southern Hemisphere's most impressive purpose-sunk wreck dives. The Canterbury, a Leander-class frigate, sits upright on the sandy seabed in Deep Water Cove, her substantial structure creating a dramatic underwater landmark. At 36 meters, divers accessing the deeper sections can explore the base of the hull, the propeller area, and the lower structural elements that are not visible from the shallower touring depths. The deeper sections have developed their own marine communities adapted to reduced light and cooler conditions. The wreck's preparation for sinking included the creation of safe penetration routes, and the deeper access points lead to internal spaces including engine compartments and lower-deck areas. These penetrations demand wreck diving qualifications and the specific skills of navigating enclosed spaces at depth, where the combination of narcosis potential, limited gas supply, and overhead environment requires experienced, disciplined diving. Marine colonization of the deeper hull sections includes cold-water adapted encrusting organisms and the fish species that prefer the sheltered, darker habitats found at the wreck's base. Large snapper and kingfish aggregate around the structure, and the wreck's lower sections shelter crayfish and various invertebrate species. The 36-meter depth demands conservative gas management and awareness of decompression limits. The reward is access to the complete Canterbury wreck experience, from bridge to keel, in one of the Bay of Islands' most impressive diving locations.

Absolutely stunning dive site. The visibility was exceptional and we spotted several species we had never seen before. Will definitely come back.
Great spot for advanced divers. Currents can be tricky but the marine life makes it worth it.
One of the best dive sites in the region. Highly recommended.
