Cars is an intermediate dive site near Dauin in the Philippines' Negros Oriental province, where deliberately sunk vehicles create an unusual artificial reef system in the dark volcanic sand that characterizes this famous muck diving coast. The site's intentionally placed cars provide hard substrate that marine organisms have colonized, creating a quirky underwater attraction that combines artificial reef concepts with Dauin's world-renowned critter diving. The vehicles rest on the black volcanic sand slope at thirty meters depth, their rusting frames and body panels providing the structure that marine life needs to establish in the otherwise featureless sandy environment. Each car has been colonized to varying degrees, with sponges, corals, and encrusting organisms covering surfaces while the vehicles' interiors create sheltered spaces that attract the bizarre and beautiful creatures for which Dauin is celebrated. The artificial structure concentrates the kind of unusual marine life that makes Dauin a pilgrimage destination for macro photographers. Frogfish adopt ambush positions on the car bodies, their camouflage matching the encrusted surfaces with remarkable precision. Seahorses grip holdfasts near the vehicles, octopuses claim compartments as dens, and nudibranchs in spectacular variety crawl across the marine growth covering the metal surfaces. The cars essentially function as critter condominiums, providing the habitat complexity that the sandy slope lacks naturally. The surrounding volcanic sand slope adds classic Dauin muck diving to the car exploration. The dark substrate between the vehicles harbors its own community of sand-dwelling specialists including flamboyant cuttlefish, blue-ringed octopuses, and wonderpus octopuses that make this coast internationally famous. The combination of artificial reef and muck diving creates a varied experience within a single dive. Cars offers intermediate divers a uniquely Dauin experience where the whimsy of underwater vehicles meets world-class muck diving, delivering the kind of creative marine encounters that have established Negros Oriental as one of the planet's premier macro photography destinations.
