Caticugan Wall presents a beginner-friendly wall dive on Siquijor's northern coast where a coral-encrusted vertical reef face creates an impressive backdrop for divers taking their first steps into the world of wall diving. The northern exposure places this site in a slightly different current and weather regime compared to the island's southern dive spots, occasionally bringing different marine visitors and creating conditions that feel fresh to divers who have explored other parts of Siquijor. The dive begins over a reef flat that stretches from the northern shoreline before meeting the wall's edge. This shallow zone provides an excellent staging area where divers can warm up and observe the abundant reef life that populates the flat. Coral coverage is dense, with multiple hard coral species creating a textured landscape that hosts clouds of damselfish, territorial wrasses, and the ubiquitous parrotfish whose crunching feeding sounds provide a constant underwater soundtrack. The wall drops away with moderate steepness, its face carved by natural erosion into a series of ledges, protrusions, and small swim-throughs that add three-dimensional interest to the vertical profile. These features create habitats at varying depths and orientations, supporting diverse communities that differ from one section of the wall to the next. Exploring the wall feels like browsing a living gallery where each alcove displays its own curated collection of marine life. Hard coral growth on the upper wall is exceptional, with massive formations that have developed over long periods creating natural sculptures that anchor the reef structure. Between these established colonies, younger corals compete for available space in a slow-motion competition that plays out across decades. The resulting mosaic of species and growth stages illustrates reef ecology in action. Gorgonian fans adorn the deeper wall sections, their elegant forms silhouetted against the blue water when viewed from below. These cnidarian trees provide habitat for a host of smaller organisms, including pygmy seahorses that cling to the fan branches with their perfectly color-matched bodies. Spotting these tiny creatures requires patience and a sharp eye, but the discovery of a pygmy seahorse is one of diving's most celebrated small pleasures. The wall's northern exposure means it receives different current patterns than Siquijor's southern sites. When the current flows from the north, it can bring nutrient-rich water that enhances visibility and attracts schooling fish to the wall edge. Barracuda occasionally patrol along the wall's deeper sections, and schools of jacks appear when conditions are favorable, adding a pelagic dimension to what might otherwise be a purely reef-focused dive. Caticugan Wall's manageable depth range and generally calm conditions make it suitable for beginners who want to experience the thrill of wall diving in a forgiving environment. The site's northern location also means it can offer excellent diving conditions when weather or currents make the southern sites less accessible, making it a valuable alternative in any Siquijor diving itinerary.
