Nonoc Shoal emerges from the deeper waters off Siquijor's northeastern coast as a submerged reef formation that concentrates marine life around its elevated structure and offers beginner divers an engaging open-water experience. Positioned near the Nonoc Sanctuary, this shoal benefits from the protected status of the adjacent reef while adding its own distinctive character to the northeastern dive portfolio. The approach to Nonoc Shoal is by boat, with the descent beginning over blue water before the shoal's contours come into view below. The summit sits at a comfortable depth, crowned with coral growth that marks the highest point of the submerged formation. This initial reveal of a hidden underwater landscape appearing from the blue is one of diving's most consistently thrilling moments, and Nonoc Shoal delivers it in a format accessible to beginning divers. The shoal's summit supports a healthy hard coral community adapted to the mild current conditions that sweep across the elevated reef. Table corals provide shade for the fish that shelter beneath them, while branching and massive corals create the structural diversity that supports a varied fish assemblage. The compact nature of the shoal means that marine life is concentrated rather than spread thinly, giving the impression of a busy underwater metropolis. Schooling fish are attracted to the shoal's isolated position, using it as a reference point and gathering place in the otherwise open water. Fusiliers sweep past in glittering formations, while snapper schools congregate in the lee of the current. The aggregation effect is particularly noticeable during current flow, when the shoal's disruption of the water column creates eddies and upwellings that concentrate plankton and attract the fish that feed on it. The shoal's edges slope away into deeper water, creating habitat for species that prefer the transitional zone between reef and open sand. Garden eels colonize the sandy periphery, their slender bodies emerging from burrows to feed on passing plankton and retreating in synchronized waves when divers approach. The sand also harbors rays, flatfish, and the occasional cuttlefish that hunts along the shoal's margins. Coral health on the shoal is excellent, with the elevated position providing good water circulation that promotes growth and prevents sediment accumulation. Sponges and soft corals add color to the harder coral framework, particularly on the sides of the shoal that receive more current. These filter-feeding organisms thrive in the nutrient-rich water that passes over the formation. The shoal's manageable size makes it an ideal site for a complete circumnavigation on a single tank. Each face of the formation presents slightly different conditions and marine life depending on current direction and exposure, giving the dive a sense of progression and discovery as you work your way around the structure. Nonoc Shoal offers beginning divers the experience of diving an isolated reef formation without the depth or current challenges that make many shoal dives suited only to advanced certification holders. Combined with a visit to the nearby Nonoc Sanctuary, it provides a full day of diverse diving on Siquijor's peaceful northeastern coast.
