Entre Montes is an intermediate dive site off Faial Island in the Azores, reaching twenty-one meters along the island's volcanic coastline where two underwater ridges create a sheltered channel that gives the site its name. The formation, translating roughly to Between Mountains, creates a distinctive underwater topography that funnels marine life and provides an engaging diving experience in the heart of the central Azores. The volcanic ridges that define Entre Montes rise from the seafloor in dramatic basalt formations, their dark surfaces covered with the dense biological growth characteristic of the Azores' productive waters. The channel between the ridges creates a natural swimming route that guides divers through the site while providing shelter from the prevailing current. This channeling effect concentrates both water flow and the marine life it carries, creating enhanced encounters within the passage. Fish diversity at Entre Montes reflects Faial's position in the central Azores, where multiple ocean current systems converge to create particularly productive conditions. Azorean chromis school in bright blue formations above the ridges, while larger species including groupers and sea bream patrol the channel between the volcanic walls. The concentrated fish activity within the channel creates a lively underwater scene that keeps divers engaged from entry to exit. The ridges' vertical and near-vertical faces support excellent growth of encrusting organisms. Sponges in vibrant colors cling to the basalt, while anemones extend their tentacles from crevices throughout the rock. The volcanic geology creates countless small caves and overhangs that shelter moray eels, lobsters, and the various crustaceans that prefer the reduced light of enclosed spaces. The channel floor features a mix of sand and volcanic rubble that provides habitat for bottom-dwelling species. Rays rest on the sandy patches, while various flatfish demonstrate their remarkable camouflage against the dark substrate. The transitional habitat between rock and sand often yields interesting macro finds for observant divers. Faial's central position in the Azores makes it accessible from several islands and well-served by established dive operations. Entre Montes is typically reached by a short boat ride from Horta, making it a convenient addition to any Faial diving itinerary. The intermediate depth and typically manageable conditions within the channel make it accessible to a wide range of certified divers while offering enough substance to engage experienced visitors.
