Recife dos Galos is an intermediate dive site in the Berlengas archipelago off Peniche, where this reef formation reaches twenty-two meters in the protected waters of one of Portugal's most important marine reserves. The intermediate classification makes it one of the more accessible Berlengas dive sites, offering a gateway to the archipelago's extraordinary marine biodiversity for divers who may not yet have the experience for the area's more exposed sites. The reef features the granite geology characteristic of the Berlengas, with rounded boulders and rock formations creating a varied underwater landscape. The granite's texture provides excellent attachment surfaces for marine organisms, and the reef is covered with the dense biological growth that thrives in the nutrient-rich Berlengas waters. Sponges, gorgonians, and encrusting organisms create a colorful canvas on the grey granite substrate. Fish populations within the reserve boundaries are a revelation for divers accustomed to mainland Portuguese reefs. The abundance and size of fish at Recife dos Galos reflect decades of effective marine protection, with schools of sea bream, wrasses, and other reef species creating levels of biomass that demonstrate what Atlantic reefs can sustain when given proper stewardship. The reef's intermediate conditions, while still demanding respect for the Atlantic environment, provide more shelter than the Berlengas' fully exposed sites. This relative protection creates a sweet spot where divers can appreciate the exceptional marine life without the extreme conditions that characterize sites on the archipelago's outer edges. The deeper sections of the reef support communities adapted to reduced light, including larger gorgonian fans and shade-loving species that inhabit the overhangs and crevices in the granite structure. Conger eels and moray eels extend from the larger openings, while various crustaceans inhabit the smaller gaps. Recife dos Galos provides an excellent introduction to Berlengas diving, delivering the exceptional marine life and wild Atlantic character that make the archipelago a premier diving destination while offering conditions that are manageable for well-prepared intermediate divers.
