Figueiral is Santa Maria Island's most welcoming dive site for beginners, a sheltered cove where volcanic basalt formations and clear Atlantic water create an accessible and genuinely beautiful introduction to diving in the Azores' oldest island. Santa Maria — nicknamed the Island of Sun — receives more sunshine than any other island in the archipelago due to its low elevation and southern position, and this light quality, filtered through the exceptionally clear water, gives the Figueiral dive an uncommonly warm and luminous character. The cove at Figueiral is protected from the prevailing swells, creating calm surface conditions and manageable underwater currents that allow beginner divers to focus on observation rather than water management. The depth is comfortable throughout the site, and the volcanic basalt substrate descends in gradual steps that allow divers to choose their own depth within the available range. This forgiving topography makes Figueiral an ideal site for early dives in the Azores for visitors who arrive from calmer diving environments and need a transition to Atlantic conditions. The reef at Figueiral supports the characteristic communities of Atlantic temperate reef life, presented here in their most accessible and visible form. The ornate wrasse — perhaps the most reliably photogenic fish in the northeast Atlantic — is abundant and approachable, its vivid colours standing out against the dark basalt. Bream move in small groups around the more complex rock formations. Cuttlefish patrol the sand-rock boundary with their mesmerising colour-changing skin rippling in constant motion. The overall impression is of a productive, healthy reef that is giving generously to divers prepared to observe it closely. Santa Maria's status as the Azores' geologically oldest island means its coastal rock has had longer to be shaped by wave action and biological erosion, creating more weathered and textured surfaces than the sharper, rawer basalt of the younger western islands. This surface texture translates into richer habitat for the invertebrate communities — more crevices, overhangs, and irregular faces to colonise — and Figueiral's reef reflects this in the density and variety of its encrusting life. For beginner divers making their first Azores dives, Figueiral offers a generous welcome to one of the Atlantic's most extraordinary diving destinations.
