Gizo Island lies in the Western Province of the Solomon Islands, a region of extraordinary marine biodiversity where World War II history meets world-class reef diving in equal measure. Yellow Corner is one of the area's most approachable sites — a coral promontory named for the brilliant yellow soft corals that encrust its surface, bathed in the warm, clear waters of the Coral Triangle. The site is positioned on a coral ridge or point where current creates productive conditions for filter feeders, explaining the extraordinary growth of soft corals that gives the site its name. These yellow soft corals — densely branching dendronephthya colonies — grow in cascading formations across the available substrate, transforming the corner into a living carpet of colour. In combination with green and purple sponges, red and orange gorgonians, and the pink of encrusting corals, the visual effect is genuinely extraordinary, particularly when a surge of current causes the soft coral polyps to extend and the entire formation appears to breathe. Fish life at Yellow Corner reflects the Solomon Islands' position at the heart of the Coral Triangle — the region of highest marine biodiversity on Earth. The species count at any given moment is remarkable: lionfish hover above the coral formations with their elaborate fin displays, large titan triggerfish defend territories with vocal determination, and the constant movement of reef fish in dozens of species creates a richness that divers from less biodiverse regions find almost overwhelming. The site is set at beginner depths, typically ranging from five to eighteen metres, with generally calm conditions that make extended bottom time feasible. The Solomon Islands are one of the Pacific's great diving destinations, with nearby WWII wrecks adding historical depth to an already outstanding natural marine environment. Yellow Corner provides an accessible, beautiful introduction to Gizo's underwater world, suitable for newly certified divers keen to experience the extraordinary colour and diversity of the Coral Triangle.
