Logan Reef is an advanced dive site in the Sudanese Red Sea, where an offshore reef system provides some of the most impressive coral and marine life encounters available in the entire Red Sea basin. Like all Sudanese reef systems, Logan benefits from the limited human impact that has preserved these waters in a condition approaching their natural state. The reef structure at Logan is characterized by dramatic topography that combines walls, slopes, and shallow plateau sections. The varied profile creates diverse habitats that support marine communities across the full depth range. The reef crest supports vigorous hard coral growth under intense tropical light, while the walls and deeper sections host soft corals, gorgonians, and deep-water species. Shark encounters are a hallmark of diving at Logan Reef. The Sudanese Red Sea supports healthy shark populations that have not been depleted by the fishing pressure experienced in other regions. Grey reef sharks are commonly encountered, and the possibility of hammerhead sharks adds excitement to every dive. The sharks' natural behavior, undisturbed by years of feeding or harassment, makes encounters here more authentic than at managed shark sites elsewhere. The reef's fish populations are dense and diverse. Schools of Red Sea anthias create the legendary purple and orange hazes above the coral that have defined Red Sea diving imagery for decades. Barracuda form their characteristic tornado formations, and Napoleon wrasses of enormous proportions cruise the reef with regal indifference. Coral health at Logan Reef exemplifies the Sudanese Red Sea's exceptional condition. The reef shows minimal bleaching stress, crown-of-thorns damage, or the signs of degradation visible on more impacted reefs. The result is coral formations of stunning beauty and structural integrity. Logan Reef is accessed via liveaboard expeditions from Port Sudan, the logistical commitment serving as both a barrier to casual visitors and a guarantee that those who arrive find reefs in virtually untouched condition.
