Winegate Reef South is a dive site on the southern face of the Winegate reef system in the Sudanese Red Sea near Port Sudan, where the reef's southern exposure creates conditions that attract marine life and provide rewarding encounters in Sudan's pristine waters. The south point receives current flow that enhances the reef's productivity and concentrates marine species. The reef at Winegate South features healthy coral formations descending through a slope and wall profile. The coral diversity reflects the Red Sea's remarkable species richness, with hard and soft corals creating formations of genuine beauty. The pristine condition of these formations is immediately apparent, with minimal evidence of the bleaching, disease, or physical damage visible on more impacted reefs. Fish populations are healthy and diverse, with the resident reef community supplemented by pelagic visitors attracted to the south point's current convergence. Schools of Red Sea fish create the colorful, active atmosphere that makes diving in these waters so consistently rewarding. Larger species including groupers and trevally patrol the reef edges. The reef's position near Port Sudan makes it accessible for day diving, providing a convenient alternative to the more distant offshore reef systems that require liveaboard access. The quality of marine encounters at Winegate, while not matching the extreme abundance of the distant seamounts, is excellent by any global standard and representative of the exceptional baseline quality that characterizes all Sudanese reef diving. Winegate Reef South provides reliable, quality Red Sea diving within convenient reach of Port Sudan's dive operations.
