Hin Daeng - Hin Muang

Hin Daeng and Hin Muang are twin advanced dive sites in the open Andaman Sea south of Koh Lanta that together form what many experienced divers consider the most spectacular diving in all of Thailand. Known as Red Rock and Purple Rock respectively, these submerged pinnacles rise from deep water in an area of open ocean where powerful currents bring nutrients that fuel explosive marine growth and attract pelagic species of extraordinary size and diversity. Hin Daeng is the shallower of the two sites, its rocky peak breaking the surface at low tide. The walls drop steeply into the blue, and the rock surfaces are coated in the red soft corals that give the site its name. Schools of fish in vast numbers orbit the pinnacle, and the blue water beyond the wall is where whale shark encounters have made this site legendary. The advanced rating reflects depth, current, and the remote open-water location. Currents can be strong and unpredictable, and the nearest land is over an hour away by boat. These conditions demand experience, fitness, and disciplined gas management. The reward for accepting these challenges is diving that operates at a level of intensity and visual spectacle that few sites worldwide can match. The marine biodiversity at both sites is extraordinary. Schooling fish in enormous aggregations create living walls of movement. Grey reef sharks and silvertip sharks patrol the deeper edges. Eagle rays sweep past, and the ever-present possibility of manta and whale shark encounters keeps every diver scanning the blue. The reef itself hosts exceptional invertebrate diversity, with nudibranchs, flatworms, and crustaceans populating every surface. Hin Daeng and Hin Muang represent the pinnacle of Thai diving.
