Dili Rock West is an intermediate dive site in Timor-Leste's west Dili area, a related but distinct location from the main Dili Rock site that offers more depth, slightly more current exposure, and the correspondingly richer marine life that these more demanding conditions produce. Timor-Leste's growing dive scene has been discovering and naming sites around Dili with increasing specificity as operators and regular divers explore the different aspects and orientations of the coastal formations, and the west version of Dili Rock represents this progressive documentation of a diving destination still early in its development. The western aspect of the formation sees more current than the more sheltered sections, and this current influence creates the conditions that support the largest and most diverse fish assemblages in this section of Dili's coast. Filter-feeding invertebrates are more numerous and better developed on the current-exposed western faces — sea fans extend their fans perpendicular to the flow, various sponge species establish in higher density, and the coral coverage on the current-receiving faces is richer than on the calm sides. Fish diversity at Dili Rock West benefits from the Coral Triangle context. Even compared to the extraordinary richness of other Coral Triangle destinations like Raja Ampat or Komodo, Timor-Leste's waters show the high species density characteristic of the region's centre of marine biodiversity. Multiple species of parrotfish, surgeonfish, and angelfish represent diversity of a degree not seen outside the Indo-Pacific. Predatory species — trevally in small groups, the occasional barracuda, and the reef sharks that are a marker of healthy fish biomass — complete the food web in ways that give the dive a sense of ecological completeness. For intermediate divers in Dili, Dili Rock West represents a step up from the beginner sites in terms of the depth, current, and navigational management required, and a corresponding step up in the density of marine life encountered. As Timor-Leste's dive industry continues to develop, sites like this one will attract increasing international attention from divers seeking the Coral Triangle experience in a destination that is simultaneously world-class in its marine diversity and still genuinely off the beaten track.
